Specs, CADs, Blue Prints, Tech Packs, Shell Patterns

Footwear development requires excellent communication of design ideas, often to multiple factories within a critical time frame. A variety of different approaches can be taken when relaying both upper and outsole designs. This depends on the level of detail needed for the project, the standard practise of the brand for consistency of communication and the experience of the factory's development team. Here are examples of different ways of working.

Below, detailed specifications for new upper designs, as per Puma standards at that time.

Shown here are simplified CAD specification sheets for quicker processing, developed for a fast paced fashion brand who were working with a relatively new factory.

Original schooling at Adidas! Drawing 1:1 scale tech packs by hand directly onto the shell patterns; then used to make the prototype uppers. Sketch renders shown are also by hand, using marker pen and airbrush.

Another technique developed which is especially useful when evolving an existing style, with a factory that are more hands on and less capable of working with 1:1 scale blueprints and shell patterns.
